Garrettson's Siberian Huskies

Frequently asked questions:

-What separates Garrettson’s Siberian Huskies from any other breeder?
When our Huskies get to old to breed we do not put them up for adoption, our dogs are our family and are not here only for the purpose of breeding.  Our Huskies are raised in our home with our family and not in kennels and we do not have a mass amount of Huskies.

-How long do we have to pick out our puppy after a deposit is put down for first pick?
We ask that you pick out your puppy when he/she is seven days old so other depositors can choose their pups.

-Can we meet somewhere half way?
I am sorry but at this time we will not meet half way. Please do not ask. Your puppy needs to be picked up at a designated area or shipped to you.

-Can we talk to past puppy buyers?

Sure, if you request to talk to past puppy buyers I will contact them and make sure this is okay.

-Are Huskies good with Children?
Huskies are GREAT with children, they love everyone they meet.  It is all about socialization.  If your husky is socialized well your husky is happy and loves to meet anyone and everyone.

-Are Huskies good with other animals?
Now different breeders may have other opinions on this but with my experience, again it is socialization.  If you socialize your puppy with your small and/or large animal(s) as a puppy then he may be just fine with YOUR small animal as an adult.  Huskies have high prey drive so you really have to work with your Husky as he/she is a baby.

-Do Huskies only dig when they are bored?
It is said that Huskies will dig more when they are bored which is true but they also dig for other reasons.   Your Husky could be hot and want to dig out a cool area to lie in or your husky may dig just to dig.  One way of keeping the digging to a minimum is to keep a small plastic Childs pool in your yard for your Husky to play in when it is hot.  Also, if you exercise your puppy everyday a couple of times a day (which needs to happen no matter what) your Husky will more than likely want to relax than to be destructive.  If these options do not work I would build a small box and add sand or dirt to it and encourage your puppy to dig there.

-If I train my puppy as a baby to stay right by my side at all times can he be off of a leash when we are out watching him?
This again is just my opinion but NO!  You should never take your husky off of a leash without a safe enclosed area to be in.  You may think that your Husky is okay to be off of their leash but it is not.  It is very dangerous and should not happen.  Coda for instance is well trained.  He sits, lays and stays when he is told.  But if he has a chance he will sneak right out the front door when it is left open just a little bit.  He will even sneak by when you are trying to walk in or out.  When he gets out (which we really watch for this) he runs!  He runs right up to the neighbor’s house and will not even stop and look back when he is called.  The only way we can get him to come back is to get in our car and drive up there to get him.  Even then it is really hard to catch him.

-Do you think it is easier to train a male or a female?
Well, this again this is my own opinion.  Some people will say a male is easier than a female and a female is easier than a male.  In my opinion it is easier to train a male.  If your puppy has the right training whether he is a male or a female your puppy will learn everything he may need to learn.  People say that males are strong headed.  It can be a challenge to train a husky but they are very intelligent and stubborn at the same time.  It is extremely important to establish house rules right away.  Do not ever let your husky on your furniture unless you are always going to let them.  Just one time letting them up on the bed they will think that they are allowed all the time.  It can be very confusing to them.

-Are Huskies part wolf? NO Huskies are not part wolf.  Their appearance resembles a wolf but they are not part wolf.  Huskies are domestic animals.

-At what age can you tell if your husky is going to have a certain eye color?
You can typically tell what color eyes your husky will have around 4-6 weeks old.  However, his eyes can change long after then.

-How often should I feed my new Husky?
Feed your puppy three times a day until about 6 months of age then just twice a day after that.  Dry food is the best for them.  Dry food is better for their teeth and if you feed a high grade food why would you need to feed anything else?

-When does my puppy have his shots and wormings done?
Your puppy will leave our home with their first shot at 7-8 weeks. I will explain that here: All puppies need booster vaccinations starting at 8 weeks of age.  Usually shots are given every 3 weeks until they are 21 weeks starting at 8 weeks.  But you should always check with your veterinarian.  Worming: We start to test our puppies for roundworms when they are 2-3 weeks of age.  We do not give them worming medication if they do not need it.  We have fecals done to see if any parasites are present.  We think of it this way, if you do not have a cold why would you go and take antibiotics?  Your puppy can grow immunities and worming may not work if they have been wormed to many times.  “Why fix something that is not broken” in my vets words.

-Do you Micro chip our puppy before he comes home?
We will have your pup micro chipped at your request.  However, this is an extra $45.00 charge.  $45.00 is what my vet charges and I assume your vet would charge about the same so if you would like us to get it done before your pup goes home let us know and we would be happy to have this done. We highly recommend this and hope that you have it done either in our care or yours.
